A website for friends and family

Category: WEBSITE (Page 1 of 2)

What is Going on in China?

So this web site includes reporting of statistics. Not in a lot of details (after all, this is not a commercial site so the statistics do not really matter), but there can be some interesting insights. For example, here is the geographic summary from the last week.

There are a handful of visitors from the US, as expected. My mother and sister regularly visit the site to keep up on the house construction. I often poke some of my coworkers to check out the latest pictures. Most of my friends are not regular visitors, but I can subject them to updates when we get together.

But who the heck is visiting the site from China? Are the Chinese companies using my blog posts to train their AIs? Is my writing style going to be used to influence the tone of thousands of colleges essays? There is no way to know for certain.

New Page – Construction Timeline in Photos

I have a new page: Our New House Construction – A Photo Timeline. I will be adding to this page as the construction process progresses. If you have not been following the progress every week, this page will walk you through the construction using captioned photographs.

By the way, I am using a new style on this new page. Compare it to the page: The View of Our Wetlands, which is a different style of presenting a timeline of photographs and let me know which you prefer (by commenting).

Slight Reorganization of the Sudbury River House Section

The menu under Sudbury River House was getting too long, so I have reorganized it a little. Now there are just three menu items:

A Multi-Chapter Story about Building a House has a list of all the story chapters, so far. The last chapter was added on April 28th so if you missed that one or any of the others, you should catch up.

House Design Diagrams has all the latest design documents for the house. Most of those diagrams have been posted before, but I did some minor reorganization in how the material is presented.

The View of Our Wetlands is a new page which collects together the same view over the past year so you can see how it changes with the seasons.

Meta-comment About Comments

I have comments enabled on the blog posts and a few people have commented (thanks). I do occasionally get spam comments, however, which I delete instead of approving. You can usually tell they are spam because they are in Russian or ask you to visit some external website.

However last night I got 9 new comments, all from a person called “tlover tonet”, but each with a different email address, an all on different posts. I am reproducing the comments below because I find it fascinating that someone would create a bot (it must be a bot) to make these comments since I can not see any reason for them.

  • I besides believe so , perfectly composed post! .
  • Its such as you read my thoughts! You seem to grasp so much approximately this, like you wrote the ebook in it or something. I think that you could do with some percent to pressure the message home a little bit, but other than that, this is excellent blog. A great read. I’ll certainly be back.

I don?t know if best practices have emerged round issues like that, but I’m certain that your job is clearly identified as a good game. Both boys and girls really feel the impression of just a moment’s pleasure, for the rest of their lives.

Well, I am obviously not approving any of these comments, but I find them interesting enough to share anyway. Does anyone have an idea why someone would create a bot to make random comments like these? By the way, a quick internet search shows that tlover tonet has commented on a lot of different blogs across the internet and even inspired one other blog to comment on tlover’s comments.

Anyway, back to our regularly scheduled site content. Next Wednesday, I meet with the builder, the architect, and the arborist on site, presumably to discuss tree removal. I will also test my new construction camera (for a second time) while I am there to make sure I can get a decent view of the existing house (and future house location) and I can correctly work the controls to actually get a movie out of it. I cannot leave the camera up at this time since it is too cold, but I will be sure to put it back before any work gets done.

We Met With the Architect Again …

We met with the architect again and I wrote another story page about it. Check out What is a Few Inches Between Friends.

In other news, our builder is back in town and will meet with the arborist today and then meet with our architect. We have been nailing down some more design details so a packet can be put together to submit to the town so we can get a building permit.

Current schedule, which is subject to change, is to try to demolish the existing house in April or earlier if the ground is not frozen (we should have the building permit in March). Then construction is estimated to be 14-16 months. With luck, we will be moving in by the end of the summer in 2026.

Chapter Five Posted

The latest chapter in the collected story of our Sudbury River House has now been posted. Please enjoy Taking Interior Design to the Next Level.

I do not have a topic for Chapter 6 yet, but the design process is moving forward, so I am sure I will have more material soon. In the meantime, the engineering firm is about to drill some test holes to see if there is a reasonable place to relocate the existing septic system, so watch where you step.

First Two Chapters Posted

I plan on documenting the process of building our new house on the Sudbury River, partially to warn people off the complexities that is home building and partially to entertain, but also to solicit sympathy for the stress of this process.

The story starts with The Search for a New House and continues with The Worst Real Estate Lawyer Ever, and both of these chapters have been published this morning. The next few chapters are still in the planning stage, but you should see them relatively soon as we catch up with real-time.

Meanwhile all of the story chapters will be accessible from the Sudbury River House page (accessible from the menu bar).
