December 28

Daphne in the villa courtyard

Today we had the same breakfast as yesterday, but we figured we wouldn't get a chance to eat lunch until late. My prediction was 2pm so I ordered another basket of sweet rolls to go. We would eat them in the car on the way down to the villa. We where headed down to Casa Las Garzas. It was a villa with 6 bedrooms. But first we had to get there. We had a luggage problem. Matt, Erin and Ian were going down with Donna and Larry, but they couldn't fit all of their luggage in the car. After a little arranging we put the extra luggage in our car.

We were finally off like a herd of turtles. Our kids had brought all 6 of their walkie-talkies. We made sure some were in each of the cars so we could coordinate when we got down there. This turned out to be a good thing. The directions to the house were not all that good. We got into Puerto Adventuras, but it took a while to find the villa.

The maid was not quite done cleaning the house. We were told it would be one hour more, which was perfect for us. We dropped off the luggage and went to lunch.

We found a place to eat, the Pub. The fish of the day was Wahoo. Yummy. They over cooked mine a bit, but the Wahoo was great anyway. I had the first of my margaritas down here. It was very different from the Cancun style of margaritas. The Cancun margaritas have very little alcohol but are made with fresh lime juice. The ones here are made with mixes and lots of tequila.

Once we got back we checked out the beds. Luckily they were platform beads. There was one room with a single queen. I can't sleep on a queen size bed if there are box springs because the bed bounces too much. I wake up at every little movement of my husband. But Karen can't sleep on a small bed, so she wanted the king sized bed. But since the queen was a platform bed we didn't have to fight over who got to sleep at night!

We all unpacked and hung around for a bit. We talked to the owner and he told us of a couple of places to go out to eat. Then we took a walk over to the Omni Hotel to check out the facilities. We talked to the guy at the dive center for a while. He told us that we should go to La Serapa Grille - a place where a lot of the native eat and was supposed to be good. We decided this was a good idea.

Downtown Puerto Adventuras
So when we got ready we tried to find it. It was in Playa del Carmen. We were told it was on Jarez at around 5th Ave. Well it was actually close to 20th Ave, but we found it with no problem. Then we had to circle the block to find parking. Playa del Carmen has few traffic lights but they have police out directing traffic instead.

The food here was wonderful. They obviously get a lot of tourists too since they are not too far from some of the resorts. Their menu was in both Mexican and English, though the waiters could speak some English - but not a lot. Karen made the mistake of talking to them in Mexican initially. Then they started talking back to her in Mexican. It seems to be easier if you start in English and if that doesn't work then try pidgin Mexican. Then they know you don't understand their responses and you get more gestures.

Well La Serape Grille was excellent. Everyone loved their meal. Well maybe not Beth. All that she will eat in Mexican restaurants are quesadillas, plain ones. I would have loved to have tried the desserts here. They seemed to have some interesting ones, but everyone was too stuffed to eat more. And we had to go grocery shopping. The Chedaui was the major market that we found. It was more like a Walmart than a super market. We were all so full and so tired that we didn't actually get very much. I crashed when I got back to the house.
