Long Trail

August 16

It was so sad that this was our last day. But it would be nice to see the rest of the family. We had an easy hike down since it was only about 3 miles to the road and the inn. We just snacked a bit in the morning and went down quickly. We wanted to get the Long Trail Inn before they closed for breakfast. We just made it.

As we were going to retrieve our packs we saw Right On. I thought I would never see her again. She let us take a shower since we hadn't had one in a week and we were going into civilization. She was checking out and getting ready to hike farther north.

We took the shuttle down to the bus stop in Rutland. I called all the rental agencies in the Yellow Pages and only found one with a car that would let me drop it off in Boston so I reserved it. It took me about two hours to find the car. I couldn't just ask if they had a car available for today. I had to give them all of my information for them to put in their computer then they had to enter what kind of car I wanted etc. After about 10-15 minutes they would tell me that no cars were available today. Or that I couldn't drop the car off in Boston. I was pretty frustrated by the time I found one that would let me rent. Then we took a cab over to the rental agency. The note on the door said “be back soon”. Well it was quite a while. Once we were in the door the gal behind the counter couldn't find the reservation. But she did have one car she could give me, but she said I couldn't drop it off in Boston. I was very frustrated at the time. How hard can it be to rent a car? Obviously impossible. We gave up and called Joel to pick us up. We went back to the inn to wait for him, eating a very yummy burger.
